Preserving Architectural Heritage in Henley NSW
The Riverside Girls School refurbishment project, which won the Excellence Award for Re-Roofing at the Roofing Industry Association Awards, highlights how traditional materials and skilled workmanship can transform and protect heritage buildings. Located in Henley on Sydney’s Parramatta River, Riverside Girls High School recently had some renovations. The brief was to preserve the architectural heritage of the school, while improving functionality. Together with APT Roofing, the school renewed Blocks C and E, involving the replacement of approximately 2,200m² of roofing.
Featured Products: Monier Marseille Terracotta Tiles (Earth, Bungalow, Cottage Red)
Why Monier Marseille Terracotta Tiles Were Chosen
A blend of Monier Marseille terracotta tiles in Earth, Bungalow and Cottage Red ensured a consistent finish across both blocks in line with the existing pattern, integrating the new tiling with the existing aesthetic of the school. The tiles were meticulously organised on the ground to ensure a seamless match to the other existing roofs. Monier tiles were chosen for their broad colour range, which allowed them to seamlessly integrate with the existing roof tiles and achieve a mottled effect matching the existing tile pattern.
They were also selected for their proven quality, with John Burgess of APT Roofing describing them as a “superior product.” Burgess reflected on the fact that not only were they the best quality, they were also readily available and Australian made, providing a reliable solution compared to imported alternatives, which can be more expensive and subject to delays.
Colour Blends for a Seamless Heritage Finish
Classic cream fascias were used to complement the selection of Monier tiles, with matching gutters and downpipes providing a refined and cohesive look.
Safety and Planning in a Live School Environment
Given the live school environment, careful planning and site management were essential. Full perimeter scaffolding was installed, including the internal garden area, supported by secure compounds with safety signage and controlled delivery access.
Heavy-duty Monier sarking and pine battens were laid to ensure daily weather protection, while materials were handled efficiently via semi-trailers, forklifts and large trucks to manage stripping and replacement. APT Roofing maintained communication with the school throughout the project to minimise disruption. Upon completion, a thorough site clean-up was undertaken to return the grounds to their original condition.
Award-Winning Craftsmanship and Project Recognition
The use of high-quality, readily available Monier tiles; with their wide colour palette; allowed for seamless integration with the existing roof, delivering a durable and architecturally sensitive result that respects the school’s character while enhancing its performance. This project received a High Commendation in the 2025 Think Brick Awards, recognising the excellence in its tile craftsmanship.
