A history of Monier and Wunderlich

Monier

The Monier Story

For more than 60 years, Monier has been Australia’s leading roof tile brand, and its heritage dates way back to the mid 19th century when Joseph Monier, a commercial gardener first invented and patented a wire reinforced system for his concrete flowerpots.

His invention was then acquired by a German company in 1885 and subsequently developed into an entire system for reinforced concrete known as 'Das System Monier', or 'Monierbuilt'. Although Joseph Monier did not die a rich man, his name became well known throughout Europe.

The name Monier first came to Australia in 1901 by way of another German, who established a concrete pipe manufacturing business at Darling Harbour in Sydney, using the Monier patent.

The business went through many changes and in 1936, Cement Linings Ltd was formed and became the foundation of the Monier Company. The company then changed its name to Monier Limited in 1979, by which time it had established many businesses associated with the building and construction industry, and had built manufacturing facilities throughout Australian and New Zealand.

Today, Monier is part of the CSR Bricks and Roofing group, and continues to be one of Australia’s leading suppliers of concrete roof tiles.

Wunderlich

The Wunderlich Story

Since 1916 Wunderlich have proudly created enduring, colourfast terracotta tiles for the homes of Australian families. When it comes to your home, you need to be confident your roof is strong enough to protect your family, has the stamina to last for generations, with colour that will last year in, year out.

At Wunderlich we believe that putting a roof over your family’s head is the most important thing you can do, a roof that has the strength and appeal to last for generations. For almost 100 years we have provided Australian families the very means of doing this with our range of richly coloured and enduring terracotta roof tiles.

Originally importing terracotta tiles from France, in 1916 the Wunderlich brothers, Ernest, Alfred and Otto, began manufacturing their own terracotta roof tiles in Australia. Their vision was that every home should benefit from the colourfastness of a terracotta tiled roof. Ever since then we have been refining this process to create terracotta tiles that are practical, beautiful and of enduring colour.

Available in range of profiles and colours to suit a period styled home to the most contemporary architectural designed house, Wunderlich terracotta tiles are the right choice. Only terracotta tiles offer a 50 year guarantee on colour longevity ensuring the rich colour of your beautiful Wunderlich roof will be there, in all its glory for your grandchildren to admire.

The secret to our everlasting colour comes from the firing process. Each tile is glazed and then fired at a temperature of 1096°C, baking the colour right into the tile, enabling it to withstand time and nature’s elements. The tiles are then cooled, quality tested and packaged, ready for your home.
